Moving from National Digital Health Architecture to Open FHIR

This abstract has open access
Description of Session
Several countries have adopted OpenHIE, a multi-layered high-level architecture for information exchange. Similarly, HL7 fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) is an emerging healthcare standard built on web standards. FHIR is open source with vibrant private support from Apple, Microsoft, Google to name a few. Government and other stakeholders in countries where OpenHIE and similar high-level architectures have been adopted often need significant additional capacity to move from adopting a high-level architecture to using them. This presentation session will use an example from maternal and child health to illustrate the steps relevant to operationalize high level architectures. In this case using the open source FHIR standard. The concepts discussed in this session will be ideal for participants with technical basics of XML or JSON data formats. This knowledge is however not required. Participant will learn steps to take from data collection forms to FHIR profiles and how to ensure conformance.
