Breaking down the Gender Gap in Digital Health: Advocating, Elevating and Prioritizing Women

This abstract has open access
Description of Session
The gender gap in digital global health is recognized yet little is done to elevate the conversation and move the needle of change. This female-led session seeks to share formal and informal research about the current gender gap across the digital health ecosystem, and empower participants to take action in their programs. The presenters will take a fireside-chat approach to sharing evidence and their experiences on how we have evolved in engaging women as a digital health community, and where we still need to focus on efforts to truly mitigate the gender gap. As part of the discussion, the presenters will highlight evidence in their programs. For example, one presenter will present data from a recent Digital Health Ecosystem Network Analysis, which provides insight into female leadership, influencers and engagement with global goods . Presenters will also share personal experiences about how they support women in countries to play a role in scaling digital health interventions. In addition to their discussion of evidence and personal stories, presenters will add their perspectives on how we support women to accept and maintain jobs in digital health, including leadership, digital architect and developer positions. The real value of this session will be giving this conversation a platform, engaging not only the panelists but also participants in a meaningful discussion. The goal of the session is to elevate the conversation of why there remains a gender gap among developers, technologists and leaders in digital health, and establish a call to action among all innovators in our digital health ecosystem to help break barriers for women and to reduce the gap. Amanda BenDor will serve as moderator and facilitate the discussion among the three, well-respected panelists.
