Description of Session
In 2016 USAID convened a co-creation workshop in Accra, Ghana that resulted into the Regional Action through Data (RAD) project. The project focused on coming up with innovative ways of using data to influence decision making at facility, national and regional levels. The two partner regional blocks that are involved in the project are the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in West Africa and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in the eastern region and horn of Africa. In the IGAD region the project focused on providing continuity of care for cross-border communities in the region, starting with an immunization use case. Jembi developed the “journey” solution that helps to address continuity of care that included hardware, software and provision of NFC-embedded health cards that are given to caregivers. Our solutions uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology and mobile phones to capture and store immunization information. The immunization record is also shared across the various health facilities that use the system, via a Health Information Exchange. The solution currently provides services such as mother/child registration, providing the child with an NFC chip-embedded card that carries the child’s immunization record and a unique identifier as well as the capability to generate a register of immunized children for reporting purposes. The solution can however, be used for a variety of use cases. During this session we shall provide an overview of the scope of the project, the solution architecture including hardware and software as well as the implementation along the Kenya-Uganda border areas of Busia and Malaba.
